The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) says the number of prisoners on death row increased from 3,590 in September 2024 to 3,688 in March 2025 — a rise of 98 inmates within six months.
Acting Controller-General of NCoS, Sylvester Nwakuche, disclosed this while appearing before the Senate Committee on Interior on Wednesday. He called for greater collaboration with security agencies to address the growing challenge of awaiting trial inmates in correctional facilities.

Nwakuche noted that many inmates had spent years in custody without trial, adding that some had remained in prison for up to six years despite facing charges that would carry shorter sentences if convicted. He urged law enforcement bodies to work closely with the NCoS to reduce overcrowding.
Committee chairman Adams Oshiomhole said the panel would submit its report based on Nwakuche’s performance and plans to tackle the prison congestion crisis.
