Israeli Bombardment of Gaza Shatters Weeks of Calm Amid Stalled Truce Negotiations

Israeli airstrikes on Gaza have killed more than 400 people, according to Palestinian health officials, marking one of the deadliest days since the conflict began. The bombardment followed the collapse of ceasefire talks, shattering weeks of relative calm.

Both Israel and Hamas blamed each other for violating the truce, which had largely held since January. The pause had offered some respite to Gaza’s 2.3 million residents, many of whom are displaced amid widespread destruction.

Hamas, which still holds 59 hostages from its October 7 attack, accused Israel of undermining diplomatic efforts to reach a lasting ceasefire. However, the group made no immediate threat of retaliation.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the strikes were ordered after Hamas rejected proposals to extend the truce and vowed to intensify military operations. Airstrikes targeted homes and encampments across Gaza, with Israeli tanks also firing from across the border.
