Nigeria, South Africa Sign MoU to Strengthen Mining Cooperation

Nigeria and South Africa have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening cooperation in the mining sector. The agreement was reached during a bilateral meeting between Dele Alake, Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development, and Gwede Mantashe, South Africa’s Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, in Abuja.

The MoU outlines several key areas for collaboration, including the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for geological applications, the implementation of remote sensing technologies for mineral exploration, and the sharing of geo-scientific data through Nigeria’s Geological Survey Agency (NGSA). The agreement also includes training on mineral processing, value addition, and the exploration of agro and energy minerals.

Mr. Alake described the engagement as a milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to deepen bilateral relations, particularly in the mining sector. He emphasised that the collaboration presents significant opportunities for industrialisation, job creation, and sustainable economic growth in Africa. He also noted that Nigeria’s rich mineral resources would benefit South Africa, while Nigeria could leverage South Africa’s mining expertise.

On his part, Mantashe acknowledged the potential benefits for South Africa, particularly in light of Nigeria’s renewed focus on the mining sector. Both ministers committed to continued collaboration under the Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission, with the aim of boosting intra-African trade and ensuring the successful implementation of the MoU’s provisions.
