Former Kogi Governor, Bello Petitions Police Over Alleged Defamation by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan

Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, over alleged defamatory remarks made against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. The petition, signed by Bello’s solicitor, N.A. Abubakar, calls for the senator to be invited to substantiate her claims or face arrest and prosecution.

Bello, through his lawyer, described the allegations as “false, reckless, and inciting”, asserting that they amount to criminal defamation and incitement under Nigerian law. The petition argues that the claims have damaged the former governor’s reputation and pose a risk to his safety and political career.

In a separate letter to Akpoti-Uduaghan, Bello’s legal team, led by R.O. Balogun, demanded a public apology and retraction of the statements, to be published in two national newspapers. The former governor is seeking legal redress, having refrained from action during his time in office.
