Over 31,000 Lagos Students Fail WAEC Despite ₦1.57bn Government Support

The Lagos State Government has disclosed that more than 31,000 students from public secondary schools failed the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination, prompting renewed scrutiny of education standards in Nigeria’s economic hub.

The figures were revealed by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr Jamiu Alli-Balogun, during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing held on Thursday in Alausa, Ikeja.

According to Mr Alli-Balogun, the state had committed ₦1.57 billion to cover examination fees for 58,188 eligible students as part of its ongoing free education policy.

However, the revelation that over half of the beneficiaries did not pass the exam has sparked concerns about the effectiveness of classroom instruction and learning outcomes in public schools.

The education commissioner maintained that reforms are ongoing to improve performance in future assessments.
