US Airstrike Hits Migrant Detention Centre in Yemen, Killing 68 People

At least 68 African migrants have been killed and 47 others injured, many critically, in a US airstrike on a detention centre in Houthi-controlled northern Yemen. The attack, which took place in Saada province on Sunday night, destroyed the facility, with graphic footage showing bodies buried under the rubble.

The strike comes after US Central Command announced it had intensified its campaign against the Houthis, targeting over 800 sites since mid-March. Houthi-run authorities have reported numerous civilian casualties, but few Houthi fighters were said to have been killed.

Despite the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Yemen, thousands of African migrants continue to arrive in the country, facing exploitation, violence, and detention as they try to reach Saudi Arabia. The International Organization for Migration says nearly 60,900 migrants arrived in 2024 alone, many with no means to survive.

This attack follows another recent strike on the Ras Isa oil terminal, which the Houthis called a war crime, as it killed at least 74 people. The US military claimed the strike crippled the Houthis’ ability to generate revenue and conduct operations.
