WHO Chief Warns Gaza 'On Brink of Famine' as Deaths Mount

The head of the World Health Organization, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has warned that famine in Gaza is no longer a looming threat but a present-day reality, as Palestinians continue to die from hunger and a lack of essential supplies.

Dr Ghebreyesus said there is no need to wait for an official famine declaration to acknowledge that the humanitarian situation has reached catastrophic levels.

His remarks follow the release of a new analysis indicating that hundreds of thousands of people in the territory are now facing imminent starvation.

Without immediate and sustained access to food, clean water and medical aid, the report suggests, the crisis will deepen further, leading to more preventable deaths.

Dr Ghebreyesus stressed that time is running out and the consequences of inaction could be devastating.
