Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has extended his condolences to the families of victims who lost their lives in a boat mishap near Gbajigbo Mudi, involving traders from Niger State.
The tragedy, which claimed 37 lives on Thursday, occurred as the victims were returning from a weekly market. Preliminary reports suggest the vessel was overloaded, with passengers reportedly ignoring safety protocols, including the use of life jackets.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, the governor described the incident as painful and avoidable. He urged stricter adherence to waterway safety regulations and condemned the recurring neglect of life-saving equipment often provided by authorities.
A delegation led by local officials and traditional rulers was dispatched to console the affected community.
Governor AbdulRazaq also expressed solidarity with the Niger State Government as both states mourn the loss of lives in the weekend disaster.
