Vice-President Kashim Shettima on Thursday commissioned the African Medical Centre of Excellence, AMCE, in Abuja, a flagship healthcare project aimed at transforming medical care on the continent.
Developed by the African Export-Import Bank, Afreximbank, in partnership with King’s College Hospital, London, the 500-bed facility is designed to offer advanced treatment in oncology, haematology, cardiovascular care, and surgery, while also serving as a training and research hub.

Set to serve more than 350,000 patients in its first five years, the centre is positioned as a model for world-class medical service within Africa.
Shettima, representing President Bola Tinubu, described the AMCE as a symbol of Africa’s growing capability to address its healthcare needs with homegrown solutions.
Chief Executive Brian Deaver hailed the centre as a milestone, affirming that cutting-edge care is no longer exclusive to medical tourists abroad.
The facility is expected to begin full operations later this year.
