Five People remanded for dumping waste in Lagos canal

Five people have been arrested and arraigned by the Lagos State Government for illegally dumping refuse in a canal along the Igando-Iba Road Link Bridge. The suspects, who include men from Kwara, Akwa Ibom, Ogun, and Osun states, were caught red-handed by the Kick Against Indiscipline Task Force and security agents as they offloaded waste from a lorry.

They were remanded in Kirikiri Correctional Facility following their arraignment at a Magistrate Court in Oshodi. This crackdown follows the government’s recent warning to residents about the consequences of flouting environmental laws.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab said the government is determined to ensure full prosecution of those arrested, stressing that the offenders risk up to three months’ imprisonment or a fine of 250,000 naira, or both, under state law.

Wahab urged residents to use the services of Private Sector Participation waste operators, which are available in all wards, to keep Lagos clean and healthy.
