16 People Killed, Hundreds Injured in Kenya Anti-Government Protests

At least 16 people have been killed and more than 400 injured during nationwide protests in Kenya against police brutality and government corruption, according to Amnesty International and the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights.

The protests, which marked the anniversary of last year’s deadly demonstrations against tax hikes, turned violent in Nairobi and other regions, with reports of live fire, rubber bullets and police beatings.

Crowds chanting “Ruto must go” clashed with security forces, as roads into Nairobi’s central business district were barricaded and government buildings sealed off with razor wire.

Authorities ordered broadcasters to stop live coverage of the protests, with Telegram access restricted and local station KTN pulled off air by Wednesday evening, raising concerns over press freedom and information access.
