Thousands rally in Kenya to mark anniversary of anti-government protests

Thousands of Kenyans have taken to the streets to mark one year since protesters stormed parliament during mass demonstrations against tax hikes and economic hardship. Despite heavy security and blocked roads in Nairobi, demonstrators gathered on Wednesday, calling for justice and chanting “Ruto must go” in reference to President William Ruto.

Human rights groups say at least 60 people were killed by security forces during last year’s unrest. Activists and families of the victims used the anniversary to demand accountability and condemn the rising trend of police brutality targeting young people.

The protests follow national outrage over the death of a 31-year-old teacher and blogger, Albert Ojwang, who died in custody after criticising a senior police officer. Six people, including three police officers, have been charged with murder in connection with his death.

Although police insist protests are allowed if peaceful, rights groups say demonstrators were recently attacked by gangs on motorbikes armed with clubs and whips, allegedly acting in coordination with security forces. Protesters say they are determined to keep speaking out despite intimidation.
