Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused the All Progressives Congress-led federal government of using the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to intimidate opposition politicians into joining the ruling party.
In a statement on Tuesday, Atiku alleged that the detention of former Sokoto State Governor, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, was part of a wider plan by President Bola Tinubu’s administration to weaken and decimate opposition ranks. He said anti-corruption efforts were being turned into a political weapon.

The Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate in the last election claimed that the EFCC has been used to pressure opposition state governors and political leaders into defecting, with corruption allegations dropped once they joined the APC. He warned that such practices undermine democratic institutions and encourage corruption.
Atiku, a leader in the newly formed opposition coalition, said the group would resist any attempt to turn Nigeria into a one-party state, urging civil society and the international community to condemn what he described as anti-democratic actions.
