Nigeria Moves to Upgrade Ageing Prisons Amid Security Concerns

The Federal Government says at least 12 of its 246 custodial centres are undergoing rehabilitation, as part of efforts to modernise facilities — some over a century old.

Speaking in a televised interview monitored by Radio Now’s Newsdesk, Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo stated that prisons such as Suleja, built in 1914, and Ikoyi, dating back to 1956, had suffered decades of neglect. He said President Bola Tinubu had approved the recruitment of 50 doctors, 100 nurses and the posting of NYSC medics to correctional facilities, many of which previously had no medical staff.

Mr Tunji-Ojo noted improvements in Port Harcourt and Kuje prisons, where surgeries have recently been carried out. While stressing that the government cannot fix all centres in two years, he said ongoing works, security collaborations, and intelligence measures are gradually addressing the nation’s correctional challenges.
