WHO warns Ebola outbreak has killed 220, says response “outpaced”

The Director-General of the World Health Organisation, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, says the current Ebola outbreak has recorded about 220 suspected deaths, warning that delayed detection is causing responders to “play catch-up”.

In a statement on Monday, Tedros said the epidemic is “outpacing” response efforts, adding that countries bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo must urgently step up preparedness measures as transmission continues.

The WHO said more than 900 suspected cases have been identified in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the outbreak is concentrated in the northeastern Ituri province, before spreading into neighbouring areas and Uganda.

Ugandan health authorities have also confirmed new cases, bringing the total in the country to seven, as officials intensify surveillance and containment efforts across affected regions.
