The Force Criminal Investigation Department has described the controversy involving singer Rema and interior decorator Amaka Obasi as a contract fraud case, not a personal arrest arranged by the artist. The clarification follows viral allegations that the musician used police officers to detain Obasi over an unpaid debt.
According to FCID spokesperson Aminat Mayegun, a petition alleged that Obasi, trading as Ardeb Lifestyle Company, entered into a ₦386 million contract with Rema in April 2023. Investigators said she received an upfront payment of ₦287 million but failed to deliver the project in full, with promised furniture missing.

Police said inquiries further showed that part of the funds were diverted to another account and that the company’s business account was not properly registered. The FCID added that both parties were advised to appoint an independent valuer, but Obasi declined to provide a report or legal representation before her arrest.
The department stressed that the matter was being handled strictly as a fraud investigation in line with the law.
