Nigeria’s Super Falcons suffered a 1-0 defeat to Cameroon and will now face a much tougher path to securing a place in the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil next year.
It is the first time the Super Falcons have failed to reach the semi-finals in the game’s 35-year history.
A 19th-minute free kick from teenage defender Maeva Nyadjou was the difference between the two sides, with Nigeria dominating the chances and possession throughout but failing to find a way back into the game.
Cameroon’s win has secured them an automatic World Cup ticket while Nigeria will face South Africa in one of Wednesday’s “play-ins” to reach the inter-confederation playoffs ahead of the World Cup.
Algeria, having beat Ivory Coast 2-1 and Morocco, having secured a 2-1 win over South Africa, are through to the semi-finals and have also secured automatic tickets to the World Cup.
Cameroon will meet Morocco while Algeria faces either Malawi or Ghana at the semi-finals on Wednesday.
