Nigerian Grammy-winning artist Burna Boy has declared that late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti is the only musician he considers greater than himself. The singer made the comment during a live stream with American content creator PlaqueBoyMax, while discussing Fela’s impact on African music and global culture.
In a viral clip from the session, Burna Boy was seen singing along to Fela’s 1981 protest anthem Coffin for Head of State before asserting that, “He is the king. He is the only one greater than me.” The statement has sparked wide reactions on social media, with fans viewing it as both a tribute and a show of confidence in his own legacy.
Burna Boy, whose real name is Damini Ogulu, has often acknowledged Fela’s influence on his musical upbringing, though he maintains that his Afro-fusion sound evolved from his personal experiences rather than direct imitation.
