Fela Kuti and Sade Adu to Be Inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti and Nigerian British singer-songwriter Sade Adu have been selected for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The institution recognises artistes and industry figures who have made a lasting impact on the development of rock and roll music.

Organisers confirmed that Fela Kuti will be honoured in the Early Influence category, while Sade Adu will be inducted in the performance category. The announcement was made during the American Idol programme, hosted by Ryan Seacrest alongside musician Lionel Richie. The induction ceremony is scheduled to be held in November in Los Angeles, United States.

Fela Kuti’s selection places him among other influential global figures, although reports note he is not the first African to be recognised by the Hall of Fame. South African musician Trevor Rabin was inducted in 2017 as a member of the band Yes, while Freddie Mercury of Queen, who was born in Tanzania, was inducted in 2001.

The 2026 list also features several other major inductees across different categories, including Phil Collins, Billy Idol, Iron Maiden, Oasis and the Wu Tang Clan. Fela Kuti and Sade Adu’s inclusion further highlights their global influence, with Fela previously receiving posthumous recognition at the Grammy Special Merit Awards and Sade continuing her international acclaim as one of the most successful contemporary music voices.
