President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated General Christopher Gwabin Musa as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence. The nomination was sent to Senate President Godswill Akpabio following the resignation of former minister Mohammed Badaru Abubakar on Monday. The President expressed confidence that General Musa will strengthen the country’s security architecture.
General Musa, who turns 58 later this month, is a decorated military officer and a former Chief of Defence Staff, a position he held from 2023 to October 2025. He won the Colin Powell Award for Soldiering in 2012. Born in Sokoto, he had his early education in the state before proceeding to the Nigerian Defence Academy, graduating in 1991.
Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1991, Musa has held several key command and staff roles, including Commander of Sector 3 Operation Lafiya Dole and Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai in 2021. He later headed the Nigerian Army Infantry Corps.
