President Tinubu will attend the UN General Assembly in September, ending a two-year absence from the annual gathering, Nigeria’s UN envoy Jimoh Ibrahim announced Wednesday.
Ibrahim, who chairs the UN Budget Committee, told State House correspondents that Tinubu confirmed his attendance during a Villa meeting and will address the 81st session, which opens September 8, with the general debate running September 22–28. Tinubu skipped the 79th and 80th sessions, delegating to Vice President Kashim Shettima instead.
According to Ibrahim, Tinubu, who is scheduled to speak around 10:45 am New York time, roughly 3:45 pm in Nigeria, will be seated in the front row, close to US President Donald Trump, raising the possibility of their first face-to-face meeting. Ibrahim declined to confirm whether a formal meeting is planned.
Tinubu will also attend side events on energy, education, and hospital management, and plans to use the platform to push a UN-backed border security initiative for West Africa, which Ibrahim described as facing a “major security challenge” from porous borders.
