President Tinubu congratulates new UK prime minister

Tinubu appoints new PTDF boss, renews TCN MD tenure

President Tinubu has congratulated Andy Burnham on becoming Britain’s new Prime Minister, following Keir Starmer’s resignation, pledging closer bilateral cooperation and recalling his own productive March 2026 UK visit.

In a statement issued yesterday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tinubu also congratulated the government and people of the United Kingdom on what he described as a peaceful, orderly and seamless leadership transition, saying it reflected the strength of the country’s democratic institutions and constitutional tradition.

Burnham, 56, replaces former prime minister Keir Starmer and yesterday announced his first policy, one of several efforts aimed at reducing the cost of living: cutting VAT on household electricity bills from 5% to zero. The cut takes effect from October 1 and will save typical households about £45 annually.
