Reps Urge FG to Grant Tax Waivers as Airfares Surge

The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to grant immediate tax waivers to airlines to help reduce the soaring cost of flight fares during the Yuletide season. Lawmakers also urged a 50 percent reduction in auxiliary aviation charges but rejected proposals to subsidise ticket prices.

The resolution followed a debate on rising airfares, which comes as the Senate summons the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, and industry stakeholders over the same issue. Senator Buhari Abdulfatai told lawmakers that Nigerians have continued to complain about escalating domestic flight costs.

He noted that a one-way ticket from Abuja to Lagos now ranges between N400,000 and N600,000, a level he said many citizens can no longer afford. He stressed the need for urgent engagement with airline operators before the festive season intensifies travel demand.

Other lawmakers, including Senator Adamu Aliero and Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, criticised the fare increases. Aliero described the rise as unacceptable, while Nwebonyi cited what he called an unprecedented 400 percent increment.
