Two of Nigeria’s largest aviation unions have given domestic airlines 14 days to pay outstanding Ticket Sales Charges or face unspecified industrial action.
The Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN) and the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) said the unremitted 5% charge, collected from passengers on behalf of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority and other regulators, has built up into billions of naira, threatening the agencies’ finances and, they argue, air safety oversight.
In a joint letter to the Airline Operators of Nigeria, signed by ATSSSAN’s Frances Akinjole and NUATE’s Odinaka Igbokwe, the unions called the charge a legal obligation under the Civil Aviation Act, warning they would “employ every means necessary” if airlines miss the deadline.
In May, the AON publicly rejected the debt claims, urging the federal government to amend the Nigeria Civil Aviation Act to empower the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to collect its statutory charges directly from passengers and other end-users.
