The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission says it is not targeting opposition figures, insisting that its investigations are conducted without political bias. The EFCC chairman, Ola Olukoyede, made the clarification during an interview while responding to allegations of witch-hunting in the case involving former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami.
Mr Olukoyede said the investigation into Mr Malami began more than two years ago and predated his tenure as EFCC chairman. He said the case was inherited and has since been pursued thoroughly and professionally, adding that charges were only filed after investigators were satisfied they had sufficient evidence.

The EFCC has charged Mr Malami, his wife and son with a 16-count allegation of money laundering. On January 7, Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja granted them bail in the sum of five hundred million naira each, with strict conditions, including the submission of travel documents
