The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has defended its decision to freeze a bank account belonging to the Osun State Government ten days before the state’s governorship election.
EFCC Director of Public Affairs, Wilson Uwujaren, said the agency does not require a court order to impose a temporary freeze lasting up to 72 hours on a suspicious account. The agency insists that the freeze followed suspicious transaction activity on the account over the past week.
Not all the state’s accounts are frozen, Uwujaren clarified, insisting that the restriction will not obstruct governance in the state.
Governor Ademola Adeleke’s government has rejected the move as unconstitutional, and directed his Attorney-General to challenge the freeze at the Federal High Court in Osogbo.
The governor has accused his predecessor — now federal Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola — of being behind the action, alleging it’s an attempt to sabotage his re-election bid.
