The Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast that Lagos and 12 other states will experience a longer-than-usual rainy season in 2026. The outlook was unveiled in Abuja during the public presentation of the agency’s Seasonal Climate Prediction.
According to the forecast, a delayed end to the rainy season is expected in Lagos, Benue, Enugu, Ebonyi, Ogun, Oyo, Nasarawa, Anambra, Kwara, Kebbi, Kaduna, Gombe and Taraba states.
The prediction also includes severe dry spells in certain states between March and May, and a prolonged little dry season known locally as the August break in some southwestern states.

The aviation minister, Festus Keyamo, who presented the forecast, urged farmers and others who depend on rainfall to pay attention to the official onset dates and prepare accordingly to mitigate risks.
