Kenya says Russia has agreed to stop recruiting Kenyan citizens to fight in the war in Ukraine. The announcement followed talks in Moscow between Kenyan Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
Mudavadi said the agreement means Kenyans will no longer be enlisted through Russia’s Ministry of Defence, adding that diplomatic channels would be used to provide consular support for Kenyans already in the country.
Estimates by Ukrainian authorities suggest more than 1,700 citizens from 36 African countries are currently fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine, including over 1,000 Kenyans.

Russia has denied forcing foreign nationals to join its military, insisting that those who signed contracts to fight in the conflict did so voluntarily.
