The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has submitted a proposal on the establishment of state police to the National Assembly for constitutional review. The move is part of ongoing efforts to address insecurity through decentralised policing.
This was confirmed by NGF chairman, Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State. The forum outlined recommendations on the structure, funding, and oversight of state police formations.
Governors said the initiative is aimed at improving security by enabling states to respond more effectively to local threats. They argued that centralised policing has faced challenges in addressing diverse security issues across the country.

The National Assembly is expected to review the proposal as part of broader constitutional amendments. Lawmakers say the outcome will depend on consultations with stakeholders and public input.
