INEC Suspends Voter Revalidation Exercise Nationwide

INEC Begins Second Phase of Nationwide Voter Registration

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has directed its Resident Electoral Commissioners across Nigeria to suspend all plans for the upcoming voter revalidation exercise. The commission cited the need to review certain logistical and legal frameworks before proceeding with the exercise.

The voter revalidation exercise was originally intended to clean up the voter register and allow citizens to update their records ahead of future elections. However, INEC explained that the suspension became necessary following consultations with stakeholders who raised concerns about the timing and methodology of the proposed exercise.

The commission said it would use the suspension period to address these concerns and ensure a more credible process. Resident Electoral Commissioners in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory have been instructed to halt any preparatory activities immediately.

The directive affects plans that were already underway in states such as Lagos, Kano, and Rivers, where preliminary sensitisation campaigns had begun. INEC assured the public that the suspension is temporary and that a new timeline will be announced once the review is completed.
