Burkina Faso’s military government has ordered the dissolution of 118 non-governmental organisations and civil society groups, banning their activities with immediate effect. The Ministry of Territorial Administration and Mobility announced the decision on Wednesday, citing compliance with existing laws.
The groups, many of which are involved in human rights advocacy, are all based in the country. Authorities warned that any violations of the directive would attract penalties under current regulations.
The move follows a series of restrictions since the military takeover in 2022 led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré, including the dissolution of political parties and tighter controls on civil society operations.

Amnesty International has criticised the decision, describing it as a violation of the right to freedom of association, and has called on the government to reverse the ban.
