FCT teachers begin indefinite strike Monday over unmet demands

Teachers in the Federal Capital Territory under the Nigeria Union of Teachers will begin an indefinite strike from Monday. The directive was issued by the State Wing Executive Council after an emergency meeting held in Gwagwalada, Abuja. The action is expected to disrupt academic activities in public primary and secondary schools across the territory.

The communiqué was signed by State Chairman Abdullahi Shafa, State Secretary Margaret Jethro, and State Publicity Secretary Ibukun Adekeye. The union directed all teachers to comply fully with the industrial action, while parents and guardians have been advised to keep their children at home for safety.

The union said the strike would continue until all outstanding demands are addressed by the Federal Capital Territory Administration, led by the Minister, Nyesom Wike. The action follows the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued on March 11, which lapsed on March 29, as well as an additional 28-day grace period granted to authorities.

While acknowledging the implementation of the seventy thousand naira minimum wage and the payment of nine months’ salary arrears, the union expressed concern over unresolved welfare issues. These include delays by a committee set up in July 2025 to harmonise entitlements, concerns over promotion conditions, and dissatisfaction with the 2024 promotion exercise conducted by the Federal Capital Territory Civil Service Commission.
