Russian forces withdraw from northern Mali after attacks

Russian forces have withdrawn from the northern Malian city of Kidal following coordinated attacks by separatist and Islamist fighters over the weekend. The Russian Africa Corps confirmed it left the city alongside Malian troops.

The Azawad Liberation Front said an agreement had been reached for the withdrawal and claimed control of Kidal, declaring the city free. The group has long sought independence for northern Mali.

The withdrawal follows widespread attacks across the country on Saturday, including in Bamako, Sevare, Mopti and Gao, while Mali’s Defence Minister Sadio Camara was killed in a bombing near the capital.

Russia said its forces evacuated wounded personnel and equipment from Kidal but would continue operations elsewhere in Mali, as the security situation remains volatile.
