SSANU, NASU Protest Grounds University of Ilorin

Activities at the University of Ilorin have been disrupted after non-teaching staff unions began an indefinite nationwide strike today. Members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union staged a peaceful protest at the university gate, withdrawing essential services and halting operations across key departments.

The workers are demanding a 45 per cent salary increase and the full implementation of the 2009 agreement with the Federal Government. SSANU Chairman at UNILORIN, Falowo Olushola, said the unions rejected a 30 per cent pay proposal, insisting that anything below their demand is unacceptable.

He said the unions had issued an ultimatum in March, which expired on the 1st of May without a resolution, prompting the strike. According to him, non-teaching staff provide critical services including security, ICT, finance and transport, making their withdrawal significant for university operations.

NASU Chairman at UNILORIN, Suberu Haruna Ibrahim, said the dispute dates back to 2017 when renegotiations of the 2009 agreement began. He added that the strike is total and indefinite, citing unpaid salary arrears from 2022 and calling for equal treatment with teaching staff who recently received a pay increase.
