Military Thwarts Late-Night ISWAP Attack on Borno Base

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have repelled an attack by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province fighters on a military base in Gonori, Borno State, during a night operation that extended from late Saturday into the early hours of Sunday.

According to a statement by the spokesperson of the Joint Task Force North East, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the insurgents advanced from the Mandunari axis around midnight on May 9, 2026, but were detected early by troops stationed at the 120 Task Force Battalion.

The military said no part of the camp was breached and no equipment was lost, with some soldiers injured during the encounter now receiving treatment and in stable condition. Following the operation, troops recovered a General Purpose Machine Gun, two PKT machine guns, five AK-47 rifles and belts of assorted ammunition abandoned by the fleeing terrorists.
