The Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, has stated that any individual plotting a coup in Nigeria is simply wasting their time, describing the military personnel currently facing prosecution over an alleged coup attempt as a confused group.
Speaking on Arise Television on Friday, Musa said he was part of the team that uncovered the plot, identified the suspects, and handled the investigation, and that the accused are being given a fair chance to defend themselves. He added that he is working to convince senior military officers that democracy is preferable to military rule and that coups bring no benefits.
Musa remarked that the people involved were a disoriented bunch who misled junior officers who could not tell right from wrong, dragging them into this trouble. He said the country was doing well, the armed forces are well cared for, salaries have never been an issue, and efforts have been made to increase allowances. The minister added that troops are performing excellently and receiving more equipment to fight, and anyone thinking of staging a coup is merely fooling themselves.

He further stated that even Nigerian civilians would have stopped them, calling the actions of the alleged plotters reckless. In October 2025, the federal government cancelled the independence anniversary parade, and days later, reports linked the cancellation to a suspected coup attempt. In January 2026, the defence headquarters confirmed that a plot to overthrow President Bola Tinubu had existed, with military and police personnel, along with civilians, now standing trial.
