The Senate has called for a total ban on textile imports as part of efforts to revive Nigeria’s textile industry and reduce dependence on foreign products.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Senator Sunday Katung of Kaduna South, who said the sector once employed about 500,000 workers and operated 167 textile mills during its peak in the 1970s and 1980s. He noted that Nigeria now imports more than 99 percent of its textile needs.
During the debate, lawmakers urged the Federal Government to take urgent steps to revive textile manufacturing, encourage cotton production and address challenges facing the industry. Some senators also called for dedicated intervention funding through the Central Bank of Nigeria and additional support from the Bank of Industry.

Following a voice vote, the Senate urged the Ministries of Agriculture and Trade and Investment to implement measures to restore textile production nationwide. Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin described the issue as critical to Nigeria’s economic development and job creation efforts.
