The International Air Transport Association, IATA, says Nigeria is among the most expensive countries in the world for airline operations. It says high operational costs are affecting the viability and growth of local carriers.
Speaking at the IATA Annual General Meeting in Brazil, the organisation’s Regional Vice President for Africa and the Middle East, Kamil Al-Awadhi, said airlines in Nigeria continue to face significant cost pressures despite ongoing reforms in the aviation sector.
He said the high-cost environment is limiting competitiveness and profitability for Nigerian airlines, adding that excessive taxes, charges and operating expenses remain major challenges across the region.
