Mexico Assures World Cup Opener Will Go Ahead Despite Protests

Thousands of protesters blocked a major avenue leading to Mexico City’s Azteca Stadium on Tuesday, just two days before the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The demonstration was led by a breakaway faction of the CNTE teachers’ union, which has been staging protests in the Mexican capital since last week.

Police prevented demonstrators from reaching the stadium, deploying thousands of officers and erecting concrete barriers around the venue. Protesters remained on the road for about three hours before dispersing. Mexico City’s Security Chief, Pablo Vazquez, said the protest was peaceful.

President Claudia Sheinbaum said the World Cup opening match on Thursday is guaranteed to go ahead. She described the protests as a provocation but ruled out the use of force against demonstrators, saying her government would continue to pursue dialogue.

The teachers are demanding higher salaries and the reversal of a pension law. They have vowed to continue their campaign and have announced further demonstrations on Thursday. The Azteca Stadium will host the tournament opener between Mexico and South Africa.
