IGP Bans Officers From Unauthorised Social Media Activities, Content Creation in Uniform

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has directed officers of the Nigeria Police Force to desist from unauthorised social media activities, including content creation and live streaming, that could undermine the integrity, professionalism, and public image of the Force. This was contained in a statement on Tuesday by Force Public Relations Officer, Anietie Okokon Iniedu.

The directive follows concerns over the increasing involvement of serving officers in video production, live broadcasts, and other online content creation activities while in uniform or in circumstances that identify them as police personnel without official approval. The IGP stressed that while social media remains a vital tool for communication and public engagement, its use by officers must strictly comply with extant laws, regulations, and the Nigeria Police Force Social Media Policy.

Officers are prohibited from creating or sharing unauthorised content in uniform, commenting publicly on official police matters, disclosing sensitive operational information, or using their position for personal promotion, entertainment, or commercial gain. To ensure compliance, the IGP directed Commissioners of Police, heads of departments, and other supervisory officers to sensitise personnel under their commands and enforce strict adherence to the directive.

He further warned that supervisory officers would be held accountable for failure to act against violations within their jurisdictions. The IGP also directed the Force Intelligence Department and the X Squad to intensify monitoring of social media platforms to identify officers engaged in conduct inconsistent with professional standards.
