Twin Earthquakes Kill 32 People, Injure Hundreds in Venezuela

At least 32 people have been killed and more than 700 injured after two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela on Wednesday. Acting President Delcy Rodríguez said the coastal state of La Guaira, north of Caracas, was the worst affected, with dozens of buildings collapsing.

The earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck about a minute apart at 6:04 pm local time while many people were celebrating a national holiday. Rescue teams are continuing search operations in Caracas, where some residents are believed to be trapped beneath collapsed structures.

The United States Geological Survey warned that the death toll could rise, with thousands potentially affected. Authorities say the second quake was the strongest recorded in Venezuela since 1900.

Several countries, including the United States, Mexico, El Salvador, the Dominican Republic and Ecuador, have offered emergency assistance, rescue personnel and humanitarian aid as recovery efforts continue.
