Gunmen abduct students writing NECO exam in Borno

Gunmen have abducted an unspecified number of students from Government Day Secondary School in Lassa, Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, after attacking the school on Monday morning while candidates were sitting the National Examinations Council, NECO, Senior School Certificate Examination.

The attack also left one teacher dead and another injured. Borno State Police Command spokesperson, Nahum Daso, confirmed the incident and said some students remain missing.

Daso said suspected Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters invaded the Lassa community on motorcycles at about 9 a.m. He said police, the military, hunters and vigilantes have launched a search operation to locate the missing students.

The latest attack comes weeks after the abduction of 42 children from a primary school in Chibok between May 13 and 14, and the kidnapping of 39 students and seven teachers from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State on May 15. Those incidents sparked nationwide protests by the Nigeria Union of Teachers and other stakeholders.
