Gunmen abducted four students, a school principal and a NECO examination official from Government Secondary School, Odo-Ekina, in Kogi State’s Dekina Local Government Area, while candidates were sitting their National Examinations Council papers Tuesday evening.
The Kogi State Police Command said the attackers struck around 5:25 pm, seizing the victims before fleeing. A combined police and security team launched an immediate search-and-rescue operation; one abducted student has since been recovered, while efforts continue to secure the release of the remaining captives.
Police spokesperson Salisu Oyiza said Commissioner of Police Naziru Kankarofi, the 12 Brigade Army Commander, and the state’s Security Adviser were heading to the scene for an on-the-spot assessment.
This marks Kogi’s second school attack this year, following a June 10 assault on GSS Iluke Bunu that killed the vice principal and a six-year-old child. It also comes days after a funeral convoy was ambushed in Ofu LGA, with nine mourners abducted and a ₦450 million ransom demanded — and days after Kogi and Benue launched a joint security patrol targeting cross-border banditry.
