The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has appealed the Federal High Court judgment that nullified its registration as a political party. The appeal follows last week’s ruling by Justice Isah Dashen in Lokoja, which set aside an earlier judgment directing the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to register the party after the Peace Movement Party argued it was not joined in the original suit.
Despite the legal setback, the NDC says it is pressing ahead with its electoral plans. National leader Seriake Dickson has confirmed the party has uploaded the name of presidential candidate Peter Obi to INEC’s nomination portal, with other candidate submissions continuing in line with the electoral timetable. The party insists it remains compliant with INEC’s deadlines while awaiting the outcome of its appeal.
The NDC is urging its members to remain calm, expressing confidence that the courts will resolve the dispute in its favour. According to Dickson, the appeal is necessary to protect the democratic process and ensure eligible political parties can participate in the next general election. The legal battle is now expected to move to the Court of Appeal as preparations for the 2027 polls continue.
