Presidency Criticises Peter Obi's Call for Tinubu's Resignation, Says Comparison With UK System Flawed

The presidency has criticised Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), over his call for President Bola Tinubu to resign following Keir Starmer’s announcement that he would step down as British prime minister, with Special Adviser Bayo Onanuga describing Obi’s position as misplaced.

Onanuga said Obi’s comparison between the political systems of the United Kingdom and Nigeria is flawed, noting that Nigeria runs a presidential system with a fixed four-year term, unlike the UK’s parliamentary system. He said recent election victories recorded by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti and some senatorial districts reflected continued public support for Tinubu and his administration.

The presidential spokesperson advised Obi to wait until the 2027 presidential election to test public opinion rather than calling for the president’s resignation now. Onanuga defended Tinubu’s handling of security challenges, noting that the administration inherited longstanding insecurity issues but had recorded successes through military operations and the rescue of kidnapped victims.

Onanuga described Obi’s demand for Tinubu’s resignation as childish, hollow, and politically motivated rather than a genuine call for accountability. He said the president is focused on solutions, not rhetoric, investing in reforms, stabilising the economy, improving security, and laying the groundwork for a more prosperous Nigeria.
