Political parties are racing to meet a July 11 deadline to submit candidate lists ahead of the 2027 general elections. According to INEC’s timetable, parties must file presidential and National Assembly candidate names between June 27 and July 11, 2026, while governorship and state assembly nominations are expected later, from July 18 to August 8, 2026.
The tight schedule is forcing parties to speed up primaries, resolve internal disputes, and complete required paperwork on time. It is also highlighting tensions within several parties, where leadership fights, court cases, and disagreements over candidates could slow down the process.
Election officials say the timetable is meant to keep preparations on track and ensure a smooth electoral process.
So far ADC’s Atiku Abubakar has picked Rotimi Amaechi as running mate, while NDC’s Peter Obi has picked Rabiu Kwankwaso. Incumbent President Tinubu of the APC and PDP’s Sandy Onor have yet to name theirs.
