2.3 million voters registered for Osun elections

INEC Begins Second Phase of Nationwide Voter Registration

Nigeria’s electoral commission has presented an electronic voter register of 2,339,233 (2.3 million) names to political parties ahead of Osun State’s August 15 governorship election, up from 1,954,800 (1.9 million) registered voters recorded before the latest registration exercise.

Resident Electoral Commissioner Oluwatoyin Babalola disclosed the figure at INEC’s Osogbo headquarters on Thursday, attributing the increase to 365,356 valid new registrations during the 2025/2026 Continuous Voter Registration exercise, alongside a net gain of about 19,000 voters who transferred into the state, after accounting for records removed.

INEC also confirmed it has now received 95% of the non-sensitive materials needed for the poll, up from 80% the previous week, with materials already deployed across the state’s 30 local government areas.

Babalola said electoral officers are undergoing technical training ending Friday, with security personnel training beginning the following Tuesday. The commission has also opened recruitment for ad hoc election staff, including presiding and supervisory officers.

Fourteen political parties are fielding candidates in the election, which comes amid heightened scrutiny of INEC following June’s Ekiti governorship poll.
