Senegal fires head coach, technical team after World Cup loss

Senegal has sacked head coach Pape Thiaw and his entire technical staff following the team’s Round of 32 exit from the 2026 World Cup, losing 3-2 in extra time to Belgium.

The Senegalese Football Federation said an executive committee review of the team’s results and prospects made a change necessary “in the interest of Senegalese football.”

Thiaw’s exit caps a turbulent 18 months in charge. He led Senegal to apparent Africa Cup of Nations glory over Morocco in January, but CAF’s appeals board later stripped Senegal of that title in March, ruling the team had forfeited the final after players walked off in protest during a controversial penalty call. Senegal is appealing that decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Former France international Patrick Vieira, born in Dakar, is reportedly among the frontrunners to replace Thiaw. The federation holds a press conference on Monday to outline its plans.
