Jannik Sinner has successfully defended his Wimbledon title, battling back from a set down to beat first-time finalist Alexander Zverev on Sunday at the All England Club.
The Italian world number one claimed his fifth Grand Slam title and sixth of the season, extending his winning streak against Zverev to 10 consecutive matches. He becomes only the tenth man in the Open Era to retain the Wimbledon crown.
Sinner faced just one break point all match, converting 80% of his first-serve points and finishing with 58 winners against 25 unforced errors. He earlier beat seven-time champion Novak Djokovic in the semifinals, while Zverev overcame British wildcard Arthur Fery.
The win comes weeks after a shock second-round exit at the French Open, where Sinner blew a two-set lead against Juan Manuel Cerundolo, the second straight year he’s rebounded from Roland-Garros disappointment to triumph at Wimbledon.
“I never take things for granted,” Sinner said in his victory speech, collecting a £3.6 million champion’s cheque.
