Former world number one Serena Williams will return to Wimbledon for the first time since 2022 after receiving a wildcard entry for the women’s doubles event alongside her sister, Venus Williams.
The All England Club announced the wildcard on Tuesday, following Serena Williams’ surprise return to professional tennis last week at Queen’s Club,
their match with Canadian partner Victoria Mboko. The 44-year-old had not competed professionally for four years after stepping away from the sport following the 2022 US Open.
The Williams sisters are six-time Wimbledon doubles champions, and last won the title together in 2016. Serena, a seven-time Wimbledon singles champion and winner of 23 Grand Slam singles titles, was not included in the list of wildcard entries for this year’s singles competition, which begins on 29 June.
Serena Williams is expected to continue her comeback at the Berlin Open this week, partnering Karolina Muchova in the doubles event. Meanwhile, Wimbledon has also awarded men’s singles wildcards to Stan Wawrinka and Grigor Dimitrov.
